In terms of its sci-fi plot and general unevenness, it’s all very similar to The Adjustment Bureau, released in March. Put simply, Will and Sylvia seem to need each other less than the storyline needs a bit of romance. It’s a real shame then that these thought-provoking concerns are not more thoroughly explored as the storyline gives way to a very generic chase movie.Īnd while Timberlake (The Social Network) and Seyfried (Mamma Mia!) are in good form, there’s zero chemistry between them. It’s a plot with intriguing issues touched upon, including mortality, the class system and that knowing how much time we have left to live can affect our judgments. Unfortunately for Will he finds himself accused of the man’s murder and is soon being hunted by the Timekeepers (headed by Cillian Murphy), with spoiled rich girl Sylvia (Amanda Seyfried) as his sidekick. Living in this scary world is Will (Justin Timberlake), a poor young man who is given the priceless sum of more than a century of time by a stranger who tells him he’s 105 years old before committing suicide. The result is a world where time has replaced money with a job paying 24 hours and a cup of coffee costing four minutes. To avoid the Grim Reaper they must have lived full and productive lives. When someone reaches the age of 25, they’re fitted with a wrist timer that counts down to their next birthday, when they’ll die. Set in the near future, the film’s neat premise is that, with the ageing gene identified, the government has developed a clever means of population control. A terrific storyline is squandered in Justin Timberlake’s new sci-fi thriller that throws up all manner of intriguing ideas – but then doesn’t know what to do with them. ![]()
